The History 

Idylwilde Park was developed between 1928 and 1934 by Earl E. Webster and C.W.  Stephenson as one of the first subdivisions north of Osborn road. Using an innovative  concept and aggressive advertising they launched the project on October 7, 1928 with a  pool christening ceremony including 26 girls in chic bathing suits. It was reported that  4,000 people came and $17,000 in property was sold that day. The cost of a house –  $4,325.00, an affordable price in its day! 

The Character 

The innovative concept was the layout of the homes which were platted around a three  acre park which includes a swimming pool, a miniature golf course, a baseball diamond,  tennis courts and outdoor fireplaces. A double row of Tamarisk trees frame the park and  still survive. Each house backs onto the park rendering it private and the owners were  given an ownership stake in the park. Homes built were in the Period Revival and  Bungalow style with broad front porches and large square columns. 

The Location 

Idylwilde Park is bounded on the east by 12th Street, on the west by 11th Street, on the  North by Fairmount Avenue and on the south by Weldon Ave.
