Is Chandler, Arizona a Good Place to Live?

By David Thomas, Realtor – Gilbert & Greater Phoenix Metro

When people ask me whether Chandler, Arizona is a good place to live, they are usually comparing it to other Valley cities—Phoenix, Gilbert, Queen Creek, or Scottsdale. From what I see day-to-day as a local Realtor, Chandler consistently lands on buyers’ short lists because it blends jobs, schools, and lifestyle in a way that’s hard to beat. Recent rankings even highlight Chandler as one of the best places to live in the U.S., thanks to its robust economy, excellent schools, and vibrant amenities.

Strong job market and diverse economy

Chandler has grown into a major employment hub in the East Valley, with a strong base in tech, manufacturing, and professional services. Residents can often work close to home instead of commuting across the metro, and the city’s business-friendly environment continues to attract new employers.

That translates into real quality-of-life benefits: shorter drives, more time at home, and more stability over the long term. For many relocation buyers, Chandler’s job base is one of the biggest reasons it feels like a smart “live where you work” choice.

Excellent schools and family-friendly feel

One of Chandler’s biggest draws is its highly rated public school system. Chandler Unified School District has been recognized among the top districts in Arizona, with a long list of A+ Schools of Excellence and strong results in areas like STEM.

On top of academics, families appreciate the parks, libraries, and community centers woven throughout the city. The combination of strong schools, organized activities, and well-kept neighborhoods gives Chandler a very family-friendly, settled feel.

Quality of life: parks, dining, and entertainment

Chandler has invested heavily in quality-of-life amenities. You’ll find a lively downtown with local restaurants and nightlife, large community parks, sports complexes, and frequent events that give the city a true “there’s always something going on” energy.

For many buyers, Chandler hits a sweet spot: big enough to offer shopping, dining, and entertainment that rival larger cities, but still connected enough that you run into familiar faces at the farmers’ market or neighborhood park.

Safety and community

Chandler’s overall crime rate comes in below the national average, which adds to everyday peace of mind for residents. Local law enforcement and city programs emphasize community engagement, helping neighborhoods stay connected and proactive about safety.

That community focus shows up in neighborhood events, volunteers in the schools, and the way residents tend to take pride in keeping areas clean and well maintained. Buyers relocating from out of state often tell me Chandler “feels” safe when they drive and walk around.

Cost of living and housing

Chandler is not the cheapest market in Arizona, but it offers strong value for what you get. Overall cost of living sits above the U.S. average and above many smaller Arizona towns, driven largely by housing costs.

Median home prices in Chandler are higher than the national median and above many other parts of the country, reflecting the demand for its neighborhoods and amenities. At the same time, Chandler is often described as “affordable luxury” compared to some pricier parts of the Phoenix metro, offering newer communities, attractive homes, and resort-like amenities at a relative discount to top-tier Scottsdale or certain Phoenix enclaves.

Pros and cons at a glance

Aspect Why it’s a plus What to watch for
Jobs & economy Strong tech and professional job base  Competition for top roles in some fields
Schools Highly regarded district, many A+ schools  Popular areas near top schools can be pricey
Lifestyle & amenities Parks, dining, events, vibrant downtown  Busy traffic in peak times and popular corridors
Safety Crime below national average  As with any city, feel varies by neighborhood
Cost of living “Affordable luxury” vs. some Phoenix/Scottsdale areas  Overall costs and housing above U.S. average

So, is Chandler a good place to live?

If you are looking for a community with a strong job market, highly rated schools, a family-friendly feel, and plenty to do without giving up the conveniences of a major metro area, Chandler deserves to be on your radar. For many of my clients—especially families and professionals working in the East Valley—it checks a lot of boxes.

If you are thinking about a move to Chandler or comparing it to nearby cities like Gilbert or Queen Creek, I am happy to walk you through neighborhoods, schools, commutes, and current pricing so you can decide whether it is the right fit for your lifestyle and budget.
