Safety Tips For Arizona's Monsoon

How to Stay Safe During Arizona's Monsoon Season
Arizona's monsoon season brings dramatic skies, welcome rain — and real safety risks. The season runs from June 15 through September 30, and the biggest hazards are lightning, flash flooding, dust storms, high winds, and extreme heat. After 30+ years in the Phoenix market, I've seen what these storms can do. Here's what every Arizona resident should know.
STAY WEATHER-AWARE
------------------
The best protection is early awareness. Check the forecast before heading out, especially if you have errands, outdoor plans, a hike, or a long drive across the Phoenix metro. Conditions can shift in minutes.
If thunder is nearby, move indoors right away — and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside.
When thunder roars, go indoors.
DRIVING SAFETY MATTERS
----------------------
Monsoon storms can turn a normal commute into a dangerous situation fast. If you see a dust storm or heavy rain ahead, get off the road and wait it out from a safe place.
If visibility drops suddenly: pull as far right as possible, turn off your lights, set the parking brake, and keep your foot off the brake pedal so other drivers don't follow your taillights into traffic.
Never drive around road-closed signs or cross a flooded wash — even if the water looks shallow. Arizona agencies warn that even a few inches of moving water can be deadly, and the state can cite drivers under the Stupid Motorist Law.
PROTECT YOUR HOME
-----------------
Before storms arrive, walk your property and secure anything that could blow away — patio furniture, umbrellas, planters, and trash bins. Clean roof drains and gutters, trim tree limbs, and check for loose items that could become dangerous in high winds.
It's also smart to prepare for power outages and water intrusion. Keep flashlights, batteries, a charged phone, drinking water, and an emergency kit ready in case a storm knocks out power or traps you at home.
OUTDOOR SAFETY
--------------
If you hike, bike, or spend time outdoors, plan around the weather. Avoid low-lying washes, trails that cross drainage areas, and exposed ridgelines when storms are possible. If you hear thunder or see lightning, stop the activity and get into a substantial building or hard-top vehicle immediately.
Dust storms can move quickly, so carrying a bandana or face covering can help if you get caught outside. And don't forget — monsoon season runs right through the heart of Arizona summer. Hydration matters just as much as storm prep. Drink water often and avoid the hottest part of the day when you can.
A SIMPLE MONSOON CHECKLIST
--------------------------
- Check the weather before leaving home.
- Keep water, snacks, a charger, and an emergency kit in your vehicle.
- Pull over and wait out dust storms or heavy rain.
- Never cross flooded roads or washes.
- Go indoors at the first sound of thunder — and stay in for 30 minutes after the last rumble.
- Secure patio furniture and yard items before storms roll in.

Stay safe out there, and enjoy the monsoon skies from a good vantage point — preferably indoors with a cold drink.
If you have questions about buying or selling a home in Gilbert, Chandler, Scottsdale, Mesa, or anywhere in the Phoenix metro, I'm always happy to talk.
